Welcome to Your Classroom

Outdoor Adventure & Education

Biking in Glenveagh national parkWelcome to your new classroom – Ireland’s epic landscape and beautiful environment. The Adventure & Leadership Gap Year Program makes full use of the superb natural resources we have in Ireland.  The majority of the Program is based along the world famous Wild Atlantic Way – the longest defined coastal route in the world.

Students will walk, climb, surf, paddle or kayak this extraordinarily beautiful west of Ireland coastline on a daily basis.

Students participate in a range of outdoor adventure activities designed to be fun, achievable, sometimes challenging but most of all fun. The Outdoor Adventure program pairs the recreational, physical and therapeutic benefits of outdoor adventure.

The Outdoor Adventure activities comprise:

  • Learning to surf on the Wild Atlantic Way
  • Lake and Sea kayaking paddles
  • Beach Rides on Horseback
  • Hiking in some of Ireland’s famous natural landscapes
  • Country walks with time for personal reflection
  • Stand-up Paddle-boarding on the sea and lakes
  • Camping in stunning wilderness locations

The students do not have to have any prior experience in any of the activities, nor a super level of fitness.  Instead, the goal is for each participant to progress in each of the activities from their own starting point to a new personal best after the full 12 weeks.

Equally, students will work as a team helping and guiding each other throughout the activities.

We use a group-led structure to task students individually and as a team to progress in each of the activities. Challenges are discussed and personal goals set, in terms of what each student would like to get out of the outdoor activities.

Closer to the end of the Program students are asked to take on more responsibility for the organisation of activities. They are given an opportunity to help plan and lead activities for a group of customers at a local surf school or a group of local young people, with whom they have been volunteering (as part of the Community Volunteering cornerstone).

The Outdoor Adventure program aims to challenge students physically, emotionally and intellectually. It will bring them out of their comfort-zone, but in a supportive environment.

Students have the chance each day to really experience the wonderful natural environment of the local area, they increase their confidence and develop their physical and mental beings.
