Here's a bit about the North West...
This coastline encompasses the counties of Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo and some of Ireland’s most breath-taking scenery. Nothing is ordinary or sedate about this part of Ireland. Facing on to the great Atlantic Ocean the coastline, its towns and villages and most of all its people have been shaped by life on the wild edge of Europe. Epic scenery is packed into this small corner of the country from the rocky, rugged peninsulas of the northlands, the thrilling surf coast of exposed reefs and sheltered beaches, to the sheer sea cliffs with grassy green summits plummeting into the ocean. There are lots of ways to get out and explore this stunning scenery – in the water, on the water, walking through forests or hiking up mountains.
The people are an integral part of the area, offering colour, wit and a friendly word to visitors. The friendly word may even be in Gaelic which is the native tongue spoken in about one-third of county Donegal and other parts of the north-west area. The area is steeped in history and folklore. You can learn about the Flight of the Earls in the 1600s from the north coast or the impact of the Great Irish Famine in the 1800s or go very far back to 4,000 BC and see ancient settlements and gravestones.
The north-west is rural and far from the bright lights of the capital city Dublin. But it is in no way less exciting. There is a long-standing love of the arts and music with a constant hubbub of live music heard from local bars and clubs at weekends in towns dotted along the coast, many local drama festivals and generally a lively atmosphere around about the larger towns.
Spending time in this part of Ireland will give you a great opportunity to really get to know Ireland, the local culture and the people. Plus, in the case of county Donegal you can boast that you were in the location which National Geographic Traveller voted the coolest place in the world in 2017.
