Program Overview:

Irish Gap Year Volunteer Adventure liquid Therapy

Liquid Therapy Volunteer Program

The Liquid Therapy Volunteer Program is a three week intensive, special education volunteer training program for students from 15 to 18. Students are trained by our professional special education team to work one-on-one with young autistic Irish children in a therapeutic capacity through surfing.

Liquid Therapy has been working with a range of young people from all over Ireland facing various physical, mental, emotional and behavioural challenges since 2011. As one of Europe's most unique charities Liquid Therapy is on the forefront of a confluence of educational & community initiatives, yet with more families seeking their services, the charity struggles to meet its demands in Ireland.

Irish Gap Year’s Liquid Therapy Volunteer Program is of real benefit to our students, the families and children of Liquid Therapy and the greater community in Ireland's northwest. Irish Gap Year students fulfil a real need for volunteers who can share the in the joy and relief that Liquid Therapy brings to local families. After completing our week-long special education volunteer training course student will be paired one on one (under the supervision of experienced professionals) with Liquid Therapy students for a week-long summer surf camp.

Special Education Volunteer Training Program:

Volunteering with autistic children requires specialist and professional training and the Liquid Therapy Volunteer Program this has attracted the most qualified and experienced members of the larger community to fulfil those needs. Students will benefit from five days of hands-on classroom & real-world training with professionals in the field of special education and surfing to prepare them for the challenges of spending five additional days in a one-on-one setting with Liquid Therapy participants.

Small Group Volunteering:

Students will really get to know the local families and children as they work one on one with Liquid Therapy students. Each day of the camp sees volunteers paired with their students for a half-day surf session in a controlled and safe environment. After each session, students will have time to speak with families and participate in additional recreational therapy with the students.

The Program is limited to a maximum of 12 students.

Professional Team:

Our Special Education & Outdoor Education team includes Liquid Therapy Founding Director Tom Loosey & Irish Gap Year Founding Director Ryan Allen - who have spent thousands of hours volunteering with the charity.  Our special education professionals have a combined 11 years of professional experience in the field.

Social Leadership:

Students will meet key members of the local volunteering community and learn how to become involved with and set-up local volunteering initiatives. This includes small –scale start-up volunteering projects and how to spec-out larger community sponsored events.

Safety Training:

As part of their training, students will learn about ocean safety and best practices of working with children. Students will be supervised during Liquid Therapy Surf Camp days by qualified lifeguards operating at a 2:1 ratio

Outdoor Adventure:

Irish Gap Year Volunteer CAmpingThe Irish Gap Year Liquid Therapy Volunteer Program balances the volunteer training and Liquid Therapy Surf Camp with an exhilarating range of outdoor adventure activities along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Students will hike, kayak, stand-up paddle board and surf this extraordinarily beautiful west of Ireland coastline throughout the Liquid Therapy Volunteer Program.

No prior experience is needed in any of the activities as they are designed to be fun, achievable and sometimes challenging.
